There’s a whole lot of misinformation and fear-based news with over-exaggerated claims dominating headlines and social media feeds that it can make it hard to get your facts straight. For me, one of the best (and let’s be honest, less stressful) ways to cut through the noise is with a book. Plus, without the zombifying-effects of staring at a glowing screen with a hundred distractions, it’s somewhat easier to digest the hard truths we may discover in a sustainable and eco-friendly book.
What, you mean you don’t also turn into a sad, computer zombie after an hour of Google-searching global warming too? Just me? In any case, to help you live a more eco-friendly and conscious lifestyle, here are some of the best books on sustainable living.
- Movement Matters by Katy Bowman: If I ever had a shero, Katy would be it. Movement expert and biomechanist, Katy Bowman hits us with the truths that much of our natural movement is profoundly impacted by the unnatural manmade forces we impress upon ourselves in our culture. In this collection of essays, Katy helps us see the connections between healthy bodies and a healthy world. Plus, she’s hilarious.
- Zero Waste Home by Bea Johnson: The Queen of Green, Bea Johnson is a full-on authority on how to reduce waste at home. Blending together practical wisdom and a appreciation of living a thoughtful, conscious lifestyle, this is an essential in any green living canon. Pick up a copy!
- The Nature Fix by Florence Williams: I have to admit that I’ve been waiting for someone to write this book for a while and was beyond thrilled when Florence Williams finally made it happen. The Nature Fix is a compilation of science, anecdotes, research and excellent journalism that tells us why we are hardwired to love being outside. It’s a beautiful and inspiring book that will hopefully encourage more people to go out and get their nature fix.
- Homemade Cleaners by Mandy O’Brien and Dionna Ford: Written by two moms, one a biologist and the other a lawyer, the Homemade Cleaners book is my eco-friendly, non-toxic DIY cleaning bible. Guys, it is so dog-eared and covered in highlighter marks and I am not even kidding when I say I use it once at least a week. Get yourself a copy!
- The Mindfulness Revolution by Barry Boyce : Not all of us realize that sustainable living is as much of a mental and emotional task as it is a physical one. Cutting back on waste and choosing better products requires a conscious awareness of your habits, behaviors, thoughts and feelings associated with all of that — and I’ll be honest, that space can get kinda sticky. Enter, The Mindfulness Revolution, which features powerful selected readings from leaders in the Mindfulness field like John Kabat-Zinn, Dr. Daniel Siegel, Jan Chozen Bays and more. Personally, this book helped me unpack the idea and apply it to my everyday life in a more cohesive way.
- Blue Mind by Wallace J. Nichols: Ahhh, Blue Mind. I love this book for the sole reason that it transports me to beautiful beaches and faraway, watery places that are good for the mind, body and soul. Wallace J. Nichols is a pioneer in the science world who isn’t afraid to let data and emotion dovetail together to create this potent read. It will no doubt inspire a greater love for our oceans and waterways and remind you to seek out our intricate connection to nature in every puddle and drop of water.
- Skin Cleanse by Adina Gregore: Author Adina Gregore founded S.W. Basics — a non-toxic, all-natural line of skincare products whose motto is simple is better. After solving her own chronic skin problems with a back-to-basics, holistic approach, Gregore founded this super successful line (one of my favorites!) and wrote a book all about it. With lines like, “your skin is your own ecosystem”, this read is one that will motivate you to think about your health from the inside out.
