Mavens | Missy Graff Ballone of Wellness for Makers

This is the first post in a month-long series called A Month of Mavens. Read the intro, here!

If you follow The Basic Goods on Instagram you might already be familiar with my good friend Missy, founder of Wellness for Makers. She is a gifted artist, licensed massage therapist, entrepreneur and 500 HR yoga teacher. We met while teaching at Yoga Mechanics and quickly bonded over our shared passion for wellness, community and well, we both have a really goofy sense of humor. There’s just nothing like someone who gets your weird jokes, guys. Treasure them. I sure do.

Fast forward to nearly a year later and Missy has become one of my biggest supporters and champions of The Basic Goods; always encouraging me to dream bigger and work smarter, not just harder. She is one of the most genuine and kindhearted people I know, who doesn’t see others as a threat or competition but invests in their growth and wellbeing. For that reason, I’ve experienced a shift in myself and had the guts to bring big projects to life such as, A Course in Calm and A Yogi’s Guide to Winter Wellness (thanks to her equally talented hubby, Jonathan at Scratch Work Labs) Not to mention, she and I have a retreat planned for this summer!

To experience some of that Missy magic for yourself, read on to hear all about this maven’s ongoing journey to bring wellness to the makers and the masses.

Beauty Basics | DIY All-Natural Deodorant

Would you believe me if I said that making your own deodorant is easy annnd fun? Probably not, but I’m gonna say it anyway! I started to make my own deodorant a few years ago because I refused to believe that it could really be that complicated. Based off what I had learned from making simple and non-toxic home cleaning products I knew that my pantry was chock full of eco-friendly ingredients that worked in my house so why couldn’t they work on me too?

Besides that, I was also keen on avoiding many of the chemicals in store bought deodorants such as, aluminum compounds, TEA/DEA, Triclosan, propylene glycol (this is especially harmful to people with sensitive skin) and parabens. Shockingly, the government does not require any safety testing before the creation and marketing of beauty and personal care products, and some like TEA/DEA have been banned in Europe due to the evidence that they are in fact, known carcinogens (chemicals that can cause cancer when used regularly).

Wellness | Restorative Breathwork

It might be surprising to hear that as a yoga instructor, deep breathing can be one of my greatest challenges.

Like many of you, I struggle with panic and anxiety that at times feels hard to manage. When I feel overwhelmed or am just generally freaking out, my breath is always the first to go. However, our breath is the most effective tool we have to manage anxiety. And that means anxiety of any kind, like the irrational anxiety of doing chair pose (it always ends, guys) anxiety of sitting still in a quiet yoga class, of not checking your email—you get the idea.

Although we humans are a species prone to doubt, worry and futurize incessantly (thanks amygdala!) we’re also capable of healing these harmful patterns in a simple and intuitive way: our breath. The beauty and depth of this mind-body alchemy is so profound that whenever I teach it in class I’m always amazed by the shift of energy and focus in my students. TBG Sustainable Living Guide: DIY Non-Toxic Cleaners

Here on The Basic Goods, I will rarely claim expertise just experience.
My life looks, feels, and is a lot greener than it used to be—over the years, I’ve managed to patch together a sustainable lifestyle that works best for me with plenty of room to grow and evolve as things change.

However, a huge obstacle about eco-friendly living is who the hell knows where to start?! It’s confusing, overwhelming, and with all the naysayers and bearers of bad news, can be downright discouraging. Despite the noise, at the end of the day the health and wellbeing of this beautiful world and body that we get to live in deserves only the good stuff and that most certainly does not include things like unsafe endocrine disruptors, neurotoxins, and cancer-inducing chemicals. It just doesn’t.

If you’re with me say, YEAH! Continue reading TBG Sustainable Living Guide: DIY Non-Toxic Cleaners
