People | Suyog Mody, Co-Founder of Driftaway Coffee

This interview is a pretty big deal. Rarely do I have the opportunity to talk to the co-founder of a radical coffee company like Driftaway about the heart, soul and game-changing tactics behind their brand. Second, I’m pretty sure that after reading this you’ll have a drastically different view of coffee, climate change and your massive impact as a consumer on the world.

Featured in The Today Show, Good Housekeeping, Esquire and more, Suyog Mody and his wife Anu started their small-batch, coffee roasting subscription company as an effort to help alleviate poverty and bring you a delicious cup of coffee customized to suit your tastebuds. You know, the usual. Coincidentally, my husband and I were gifted a 6 month coffee subscription as a wedding gift (shout out to Scott and Anna) and as coffee lovers, we were hooked.

Now, I don’t want to give too much away but there are so many things that make Driftaway Coffee unique. From their perspective on using Organic certifications (it’s not 100% and they’re fine with that), why farmers deserve a spotlight and the important reason that coffee needs science to survive the effects of climate change.

Hopefully you’ve read the fantastic interview with Bill Ahrens of New Country Organics Farm (if you haven’t go do that, too) and are about to have your mind blown and lens shifted once again by Suyog. His passion for sustainability and supporting others shines through and I hope you leave feeling motivated to take #inspiredaction.

Huge thanks to Suyog of Driftaway Coffee for being so generous with his time and energy. Make sure you get a coffee subscription for yourself and gift at least one more this holiday season. Enjoy, friends!

Lifestyle | The Best Sustainability Podcasts

Having sustainable habits and living an eco-friendly lifestyle is, like any endeavor, hard to do if you aren’t constantly learning new things. To stay updated, I have a roster of sustainability podcasts that focus on nearly every aspect of green living so that I’m always feeling inspired and motivated to keep going even when it gets hard.

Let’s be honest friends, sometimes you feel pretty alone in this thing (re: the girl in the corner freaking out over the styrofoam plates at a family dinner) and it helps to have likeminded people who are just as enthusiastic and passionate about these topics as you are. So, podcasts? Yeah, that’s a huge part of green living for me.

To get you started, I’ve rounded up the best sustainability podcasts with everything from story-driven narratives, interviews, to lighthearted conversations and advice, to the downright nerdy science that you need to know (my favorite).

DIY | Eco All-Purpose Cleaning Spray

Of all the tips, tricks and life hacks that make living an eco-friendly lifestyle accessible, 3 ingredient recipes are by far my favorite ones. Why? Because it’s not hard to memorize such a short list and it keeps Brian and I from becoming dependent on store-bought cleaners. For me, that second part is a such a huge win. There’s nothing more paralyzing and discouraging than wanting to do better but feeling overwhelmed by the process. So, it’s empowering to find something like this that really works.  Continue reading DIY | Eco All-Purpose Cleaning Spray

Wellness | Homemade Eucalyptus Tea

Happy Autumn, everybody! Autumn is a time of year that both thrills and terrifies me. On the one hand, it’s a breathtakingly beautiful season (my favorite of them all), is the perfect weather for camping, hiking and being out of doors — and of course, is just the beginning of a very long and very wonderful string of holidays.

Oh, right, the terrifying part. The chillier weather also signals the start of sinus, cold and flu season! If you’re anything like me you fall prey to these things all. the. time. For this reason, I am willing to try most remedies that promise healing and a hope for a less congested future.

I recently got knocked off my feet by a virus-turned-sinus infection and ran to the store to pick up some essentials when I decided to grab myself some eucalyptus leaves to brighten things up — you know, as one does. As I got a whiff of this potent flora I wondered how they would fare as a tea? Luckily, intuition served me right. Not only was my homemade eucalyptus tea delicious and easy to make it was also totally WORKING!!! To my delight, I also discovered it works great as an inhalant if you are suffering from those nasty dry and itchy symptoms.  Continue reading Wellness | Homemade Eucalyptus Tea

DIY | Eco-Friendly Air-Fresheners

Let’s face it, sometimes (not pointing fingers) things around the house can get a little smelly. Places like the kitchen, bathroom and even our closets may develop a malodour that is none too pleasing. In this case, our first impulse is to reach for store bought air-fresheners and spray the place down until it smells like a veritable Peach Paradise or Green Apple Orchard.

Although this may be an easy solution, many fresheners (this includes scented candles) found on the shelf are laden with harsh chemicals. The EPA lists formaldehyde, petrochemicals and other airborne toxins as some of the most harmful and common ingredients found in many air fresheners and household cleaners. Kitchen Composting 101 (Updated!)

Here is an updated version of this post with a few more pieces of advice from what I’ve learned since this article first went live. I hope it helps! Would love to hear from you in the comments below.

Way back when, I used to think everything I didn’t want, need or knew what to do with, went straight into the garbage. That was then and this is now: I have a love for composting like no other. It is super impactful and surprisingly simple.

So, why all the love for composting? To put it simply,  it’s a fantastic way to help reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions. When garbage gets taken to landfills, the contents often sit there unable to properly break down due to lack of oxygen. When this happens it goes through a detrimental process called anaerobic decomposition that produces methane (the greenhouse gas we were talking about) and prevents nature from doing the work it needs to do!

3 Air-Purifying House Plants

Years ago in Vancouver, BC, I stumbled into a mystical-looking floral shop with a jaw-dropping display of plants of all different colors, textures, shapes and sizes. The sheer beauty and creativity of the wall blew me away and being the eager, ambitious young woman that I am I marched straight up to the counter with a hundred questions — the most important was, “how can I do THIS?!”.

The florist was kind enough to educate me on the plants and their benefits and assured me that there was more to them than just how pretty they looked. Since then, I have been a stalwart champion of house plants. This is not to say I am a particularly gifted gardner but I do believe that they are important to keep in your home. Everyday BeWILDerment: Why Finding Awe and a Connection to Nature is the Greatest Source of Wellness

As humans we are incredibly smart, calculating and savvy creatures; traits that in my mind, seem to work both to our benefit and detriment. These days, the thought of that leaves me with the leery feeling that those efforts and energy might be slightly misplaced. This came to the forefront of my mind not too long ago when I found myself nauseated by yet another internet blurb telling me to chase after the life of my dreams. It was annoying because I didn’t know what that life was and felt immense pressure to somehow figure it out and make it snappy, or else.

A topic that has always fascinated me is our own cultural fascination with obtaining happiness, contentment, and complete and utter bliss. To be honest, it doesn’t so much annoy but interest me because I do think that the overarching message of this concept is really well-intentioned and inherently good, however, in our wired and disjointed world that goal just doesn’t seem real. Redefining Green Home Design

If your perception of eco-friendly homes conjures images of elaborate tree houses, mud huts, or dilapidated cabins in the woods, then you are waaaaay off. The evolution of green home design, both interior and exterior, has become an innovative landscape rich with fresh ideas and beautiful architecture that has sustainability and mindfulness at its very core.

I’ll admit, this style is extremely modern but whether or not it appeals to you in its entirety, there are some pretty genius ideas that challenges the average homeowner to redefine the concept of what is green design. As someone who is more interested in carving out a niche within the crossover of uber-modern sustainability and everyday living I picked a few design ideas from these dreamy digs that could be adapted and applied to your home, too. How to Throw a Stylish and Sustainable Holiday Party

No matter which way you spin it, the holidays generate much more waste than any other time of year. The EPA estimates it’s about 25% more which is about an extra 1 million tons per week. YIKES, YOU GUYS. As a lover of get togethers and holiday parties myself, I thought it would be helpful for all of us to consider effective ways to cut back and be more mindful about the waste our festive bash is likely to create.  The good news is that sustainability practices don’t need to sacrifice style — in fact, your décor and materials will likely make it even more beautiful.  So after doing some digging I found some really great tips on how to throw a stylish and sustainable holiday party. Enjoy!
